It was super hot and rocky today and my feet were already hurting as I took my first steps on the trail at 5 am. Yes I said 5am, it was supposed to pour this afternoon starting after 12 noon and we figured we would get up and on the trail super early to try and beat the rain.
So we headed out, heads down with our headlamps on watching every foot placement because of the rocks! Yes I think we now both agree Pennsylvanian should be renamed Rockslvanian. In the beginning the amout of rocks was no worse than any other state but these last 3 days have turned into constant rock paths, fields and rock gardens and a few boldering sections thrown in. We are told coming up it's even worse rock wise.
They even labeled when it would get worse!
I came across this interesting marker.
And saw this memorial for a local ATC club member.
Anyhow I got out just as it started to rain and I was going a snails pace due to the rocks and having to hold my umbrella. Got to Jen before it really started to come down and heard about her day. She got out quicker than me and her feet didn't hurt nearly as bad as mine, hmmmm. She also told me she is keeping the bee sting run alive as she got stung again today.
Since we got done early we found a FlyingJ and had a shower and washed our clothes, nice to feel human.
Afterwards to kill time we wandered around Cabelas and while there I saw the hiking shoes and saw a pair a fellow hiker had gotten because of the rocks. I tried on a pair of Merrill Moab 3 mids and tested them on their rock testing walkway and they felt way better, SOLD! They were only $109 so not bad. Also supposedly the company has a thru hiker program and will send a free pair after the first pair wear out so calling about that.
So my Altra TIMPS I went back to after my Speedgoats wore out and gonna be my town shoes. The soles and too soft for PA and the sides are already blown out after about 285 miles.

I will be wearing these tomorrow to do battle with the rocks!
