Zero Day May 19
Zero Day May 19, Days miles 0 AT Mile 534.3
We got our gear together and we headed out for the day. Did some resupply shopping and then headed to Damascus for Trail days.
We saw several people we have hiked with in the past including Lucky who adopted us as her trail parents.
Had lunch one last time at the local diner and then went to hear Mills Kelly from the Green Tunnel podcast speak about the lost AT trail, part of the trail that was abandoned because they rerouted it.
We then headed off to drop the car off 75 miles ahead of where we got off last at a hostel in Bland VA and there we sat for hours waiting for our shuttle driver. There wasn't any hiking done today because we got shuttled so late, ugh. Our driver showed up 2 hours late and we felt bad after hearing the day he had. The other hiker he was to pick up before us had just given him a gps location and the gps kept trying to bring him via forest roads that were either closed or flooded. As we talked with him it was crazy to learn he was from Maine and had worked at CMP as a programmer. He left the company back in the late 70s, he is a lot older and did shuttling to keep busy and just charged by donation. His name is Paul York, any CMPers remember that name?

We were there early and walked around the vendor area and picked up a few things we wanted and stopped to talk to some vendors like Jens pack company LiteAF and Hyperlite about our tent.
We also stopped to talk to the three men we shared the Wise shelter with. They are part of an organization called Luke Adventures that take handicapped people out on the trails on a special wheeled and carring device.

Sounds like a fun day. Crazy coincidence to meet an old CMP programmer….from way back in the key punch days.
