Day 1 April 2 the start!
Day 1 Apr 2nd days miles 7.1, AT mile 6.2
Camped at Hickory Flatts Cemertary
Hiking hours-5hrs ish
We got our picture taken under the approach trail Arch at Amicalola Falls Park. Our start day is Sunday and our shuttle driver said it will be super busy so we decided to skip the approach trail.
We got dropped off at the Springer Mt trail head at 11am and hiked .9 mile to Springer mt peak the start and then headed northbound "NoBo".
There was a section of the trail that looked like the jungle, was very cool to walk through. We met a couple a bit older than us from New Hampshire on the trail and was fun to talk to.
They know how to build bridges down here, very few rock hopping so far.
We learned about a quite place to camp that had a covered area to eat with tables and chairs and nice out houses. It's called Hidden Flats cementary. It was short of the shelter but would be less peoply which is good for Allagash. Met 2 hikers there, un-named Matt and Kid Rock. Had fun eating supper with them and talking about the trail and our expectations. They got there early and said we just missed hiker magic.
We settled in for a quiet nites sleep and at 9:30 a loud truck rolled in parked a min and the left but parked a few hundred feet away and shut the engine off and there were several voices and they started making a racket. All I could think of was deliverance! The noise didn't stop till after 1 AM, not peaceful night!
Then a bit before 7am, in a deep sleep there was a huge boom and machine gun firing, WTF. We got up to see it was a military truck and it was army rangers on training. The noises were all simulated thank goodness.
Day 2 Apr 3rd, days miles 8, AT mile 14.2
Hiking hours-5.5 hrs
Stayed at Justus Creek,
note light rain all day
We got to have breakfast sitting at a table and chairs and chatted with No name Matt and Kid Rock before they headed out. We are slow packing up and rolling, hopefully that will improve.
Interesting note, it gets light at 7am and doesn't get dark till about 8pm.
Shortly after leaving it started to rain and it rained lightly all day so no pictures. It was a good hike making 8 miles as weather was cool but was some steep climbs and declines which are a killer on my knee. We were headed to a campsite but just before it was a babbling brook and at the foot of some steps Jen rolled her ankle so we found a spot right there so she didn't have to climb the hill up to the camp site.
She soaked it and we hit the sack early.
