So we stealth camped about 3 miles outside of Pearisburg and I do not know what industry is running product through the town on trains but there were trains going through town all night about every 40 min and would blow the horn at road crossings, like 10 times!  It was so loud even ear plugs didn't stop the noise, no sleep for Jen and Phil again...   Prior night we slept in a shelter and was next to a high intensity snorer!

Today again we hiked SOBO again and we should have considered the elevation gain direction, it was mostly up all day, and a huge 2k feet up right off the bat! This screen shot is looking back at what we did so the descent number is what we climbed today in elevation.

We are trying to make big miles again to shorten the hiking we will have to do in the rain tomorrow.  Originally we were targeting doing 18 miles but we were feeling good and had daylight so we pushed on to a 22.6 day.  Only have an 8 or so mile hike out tomorrow now.

Saw 2 deer up close and got pictures.

I thought these were Mountain Laurel but I was wrong, this is that plant.

More rock walking, these were huge and some moved, a lot!


This tunnel was so thick it was dark under it, well with my sunglasses it was!

With this big mile day we stand a chance of beating the rain tomorrow!

    Wow, that is a lot of miles in one day, and hard miles…very impressive! Have you worn out a pair of shoes yet?

      We both switched our shoes after restarting without Allagash so no, but Jens are getting torn up now. This Jun 11.

Final 2023 Update

So after our last day hiking on Aug 6th we had events that needed our time and it took us away from the trail for a long time and we have decided to call it for the year.  We may try to come back and finish it next year but have no idea at this point if we will. We did get to see some of the friends we met along the trail later. We had friends on trail nearby and we went to camp to meet them. We also did trail magic at the RT 27 trail head near camp while we waited for them and saw some friends passing through. This is Lucky and Dreamsicle, we met Lucky way down in Georga and Jen became her trail mom.  We hiked off and on with her for awhile and then we got separated but kept tabs on each other. Day 91 Aug 6 Mile 2020.2 to 2026.6 Days miles 6.4 AT Maine total miles.- 37 Allagash total AT Miles - 276.1 Stayed at Stafford Notch campsite Hiking time 4 hr Total Deer seen - 0 today , 94 total Animals seen today - Grousse We had spent the night at Strafford Notch campsite with a good water source and a privy which is always nice. The paths through the site were not well marked so we didn't find a good tent pad and just set up on the side of the access trail to it. was pretty flat but also quiet as there were a lot of people there and other dogs. We had one 3k mountain (Little Bigelow) today and then a long 2000 ft decent to get to the car. The terrain was still tough, lots of roots and slick smooth rocks to climb down so was a slower pace than we thought we could do.  There was some nice views from this lower peak though of Sugarloaf. We are doing the Bigelow range in two days so have our full packs for an overnight stay.  This is a tough section, really tough first day with climbing 2 3K mountains and 2 4K mountains in one day. Started from RT 27 with a flattish warmup before climbing up to the Horns shelter. Alli has become a log crossing master. . And then the trail started to go up. This is a view of the Horns pond.
