Today was a zero spent at the Fontana Village Resort at a cabin and going around catching up with hiking friends and getting ready for tomorrow.
Cool seeing the clouds roll over the mountain ridge.
Now how did this get here!

Allagash gets picked up today at 4pm for her kennel resort stay. She probably will be SAD but if she knew she was missing 7 days hiking huge mountains and probably most in the cold in rain it appears, she would be happy.

Yes weather is cold and looks like on Wednesday it will be raining for the rest of our hike in the Smokies.  We hope to do in 6 days but may take 7.


In preparing for the Smokies we are leaving anything we do not need with the kennel, its feeling like 10lbs of stuff!  Should help us move faster and further each day.

We checked out the hiker box and got some things we could use like we borrowed some shaving cream, some gold bond powder, a power bar, a pair of socks and a trekking pole so I have 2 to help me with downhills!

Allagash got to see her favorite new friend Lucky one last time and made 3 more friends. 
We also met 3 people hiking the Benton McKay Trail, 2 of which are from Maine!   The other person was very interesting to talk to, we met him waiting to be seated for breakfast and joined him for the meal.  Was interesting to chat with him as he has hiked the AT, has been in informational videos for Hyperlight gear and has tested new products for them!

Hopefully the weather improves and we have some good views in the Smokies!

Final 2023 Update

So after our last day hiking on Aug 6th we had events that needed our time and it took us away from the trail for a long time and we have decided to call it for the year.  We may try to come back and finish it next year but have no idea at this point if we will. We did get to see some of the friends we met along the trail later. We had friends on trail nearby and we went to camp to meet them. We also did trail magic at the RT 27 trail head near camp while we waited for them and saw some friends passing through. This is Lucky and Dreamsicle, we met Lucky way down in Georga and Jen became her trail mom.  We hiked off and on with her for awhile and then we got separated but kept tabs on each other. Day 91 Aug 6 Mile 2020.2 to 2026.6 Days miles 6.4 AT Maine total miles.- 37 Allagash total AT Miles - 276.1 Stayed at Stafford Notch campsite Hiking time 4 hr Total Deer seen - 0 today , 94 total Animals seen today - Grousse We had spent the night at Strafford Notch campsite with a good water source and a privy which is always nice. The paths through the site were not well marked so we didn't find a good tent pad and just set up on the side of the access trail to it. was pretty flat but also quiet as there were a lot of people there and other dogs. We had one 3k mountain (Little Bigelow) today and then a long 2000 ft decent to get to the car. The terrain was still tough, lots of roots and slick smooth rocks to climb down so was a slower pace than we thought we could do.  There was some nice views from this lower peak though of Sugarloaf. Day 90 Aug 5 Mile 2010 to 2020.2 Days miles 10.2 AT Maine total miles.- 30.6 Allagash total AT Miles - 269.7 Stayed at Stafford Notch campsite Hiking time 9 hr Total Deer seen - 0 today , 94 total Animals seen today - 1 snake Today was a big day, for all of us. We are doing the Bigelow range in two days so have our full packs for an overnight stay.  This is a tough section, really tough first day with climbing 2 3K mountains and 2 4K mountains in one day. Started from RT 27 with a flattish warmup before climbing up to the Horns shelter. Alli has become a log crossing master. . And then the trail started to go up. This is a view of the Horns pond.
